The most popular Christmas markets

The most famous market is located on the Place d’Armes. Since 1984, this square has been the beating heart of the city’s Christmas celebrations, complete with a giant Christmas tree and a life-size nativity scene. Stroll at your leisure from square to square, warm up with a hot chocolate or mulled wine, and enjoy the thousands of lights in the streets. Admission to the markets is free; you only pay for the attractions and snacks.

In the car-free streets surrounding the impressive basilica, you can fully savor regional specialties, such as artisanal gingerbread, roasted chestnuts, and flavorful local cheeses. At the Lions Club stall, you can order the traditional “Feuerzangenbowle”—mulled wine topped with a flaming sugar cap. With lively live music and fun children’s activities, this is a wonderful, authentic outing.

During Candle Night on Friday, the shops stay open extra late, and you can enjoy performances and festive lighting in the cozy pedestrian zone. The rest of the weekend, cheerful Christmas music fills the squares around the church. Among the stalls, you can browse for handmade gifts from local artisans. With a steaming cup of mulled wine or hot apple cider in hand, it’s wonderful to stroll through the wintery shopping streets here.

In Germany’s oldest city, you’ll immediately feel the magical historic atmosphere among the half-timbered houses and centuries-old buildings surrounding the market square. With some 90 stalls, you’ll be spoiled for choice with artisanal candles, fragrant spices, and handmade decorations. Be sure to try the “Glühviez,” a warm apple wine from the region! A little tip for our guests: it’s best to visit Trier on a weekday, so you can explore at your leisure without the weekend crowds.

During these so-called “Liichtwochen,” the castle is illuminated like something out of a fairy tale, and the program features various Christmas concerts. At the market itself, in the castle amphitheater, an unforgettable evening awaits you, filled with fresh treats and music for young and old alike. Because the entire Christmas village is cozily covered by a large tent, it’s wonderfully comfortable here even in cold or wet winter weather. Please note: this special market really does last just one evening!

It’s a small-scale, incredibly friendly market that’s just a short drive from the park. Last year, in addition to the market, there was also a cozy craft market in the old church, and on Sunday you could take a magical horse-and-carriage ride. Since Diekirch is literally just a stone’s throw away, it’s the perfect destination for a spontaneous winter afternoon or evening out with the family.
